I'd really looked forward to this Friday 'cause School of Seven Bells were playing w/ Black Moth Super Rainbow at one of the best venues in LA - The Troubadour. I'd only listened to a few of their tracks on MySpace and seen some live footage on YouTube, but loved it; up-beat & danceable. They did a really good job and I got to hear a lot of songs that I obviously hadn't heard before. Gotta go to Amoeba and buy 'Alpinisms' (and the rest of the store!) soon. I've got to admit that I was most surprised & amazed by Black Moth Super Rainbow. Their show was priceless; the intro with all of its self-irony, the visuals with surrealism, a guerilla-like hairy stage-diving man with a Japanese-mask whose job was to get people excited and best of all; the incredible music.
I had to help around in the house Saturday. Janet & Casper had invited Julia & her family and Rich & Elle for dinner. We had a delicious (!) meal and maybe just a bit too much red wine and Irish Coffee. I ended up talking with C. about the military and once again politics until 3 o'clock in the morning and went to bed with a half-promise of joining the army for 4 months next spring. Let's see about that; it would be a challenge.
I drove down to Santa Clarita to pick up Janni Sunday morning. We went into Hollywood and the incredibly beautiful and - almost - breathtaking Pantages Theatre to try something completely new (for me). I've been out to a lot of different concerts and seen just as many kinds of shows and movies, but somehow I've never been blown away by this genre. We bought tickets for 'Dirty Dancing' and we were very lucky. The ones we got were only $25, but because we were there pretty late, we got rush-tickets and ended up being seated in the middle of it all about 15 rows from the stage. I liked the show as well, especially 'cause it wasn't a classic musical were all the actors sing silly & jolly songs instead of talking. The leading actors actually spoke to each others, the dancers were so graceful and the vocals & music reminded me of a time when I watched the movie with my girls back home and tried to do 'the lift' - and failed over and over again. I had to rush back to the house and help prepare the dinner. We had some Danish plane mechanics coming over and once again ended the evening with too much red wine and coffee (without the Whiskey though).
